The handling and processing of personal data is regulated by law. The EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the basis for uniform application across the EU. For universities, the individual data protection laws of the federal states apply in most cases, e.g. the Data Protection Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (DSG NRW). The European GDPR defines personal data as any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person (Art. 4 GDPR, para. 1). A person is identified if it is clearly recognisable to which person the data belong. A person is identifiable if they can be identified by means of additional information.

Identifiziert ist eine Person, wenn eindeutig erkennbar ist, zu welcher Person die Daten gehören. Identifizierbar wird eine Person, wenn sie mittels Zusatzinformationen identifiziert werden kann.
